Like many people, after I switched to Linux for everything else (around 2006) I convinced myself that I still needed to keep a dual boot environment around for a couple of (then) incompatible games I was sure I couldn't live without. Linux distros have been using package management for almost 30 years now but it's cool to see interesting alternatives. If you're interested in alternative approaches to this issue read this intro to GoboLinux, it's a cool read even if you don't plan to use it.

When Apple designed OS X they specifically tried to address the issue of file management by giving each app its own dir, like Android does too.

Most Windows machines had at least a few pieces of malware at any given time, which could be doing any amount of shenanigans, ranging from looking for CC numbers to coordinating with a few million other PCs to perform a DDoS attack on some famous website. Last but not least there was a lot of malware. Sometimes you'd have things like services left behind, intentionally or not, that kept running and taking up resources. Not being able to delete a file while it was in use was another bad design decision that contributed to this problem. dll's) and/or left them behind when uninstalled (because they were in use by another program). This resulted in kits that overwrote each others' files (particularly.

When an install kit ran it could do whatever it wanted. In case you're curious, it was mostly due to the lack of file/package management. Long live Linux and FOSS! We will rule the world! :) "ĭon't know why but I could never get a windows install to last more than 6 months without deteriorating to an unusable state. I'm on Arch now on my main machine and Garuda on my second laptop. They are very important and people should take their abuse more seriously. Games work better for me than on Windows cause I'm using AMD now, the system is fast, I have 0 compatibility issues since I tranferred all my workflow to Linux apps and I have realised how important the values and ideals of FOSS are.
And Manjaro offered that.ģ and a half years later, I have tried almost any distro that I deemed worthy of a look and I have even learned some terminal things. I only cared about not using terminal and having maximum compatibility. I didn't know at the time that the AUR can break your system on Manjaro and even if I knew I wouldn't care. It took one more search to learn what the AUR was and I was sold. So instead of Windows I went with Manjaro and I have to say that was another revelation. One of them had a Manjaro KDE pic though and that made me REALLY curious. I googled 10 easiest distros and of course a lot of, I know now, completely useless articles came up.

So I was literally gonna download Windows and put it back on my laptop when I decided to maybe look for some other distro that could potentially be more user friendly. So after a month of using Ubuntu I was thinking that Linux is nice and all now but too much terminal. Actually I didn't think about that at all. That's when I started thikning that maybe this is a viable option for an OS now.Īt the time I didn't care about FOSS and ethicality in my software. Literally ALL my games at the time worked except FF XV (I don't play shooters). I was VERY doubtful it would work at all at first but it was an absolute revelation. I looked up how you could MAYBE game on Linux and Proton came up. I found Dolphin Emulator though in the App Store and gave it a shot and it ran gloriously on my 1060 laptop GPU. I installed it and immediately didn't like the fact that I had to use terminal for some things.
I decided to give it another shot on bare metal just to see how it had evolved. I hadn't tried Linux since 2010 when Ubuntu left a sore taste in my mouth. Then in October 2018 my professor at uni said that we HAD to use Linux for an assigment. " I always thought Linux was too hard and very incompatible to use.

Here's my story, feel free to share yours as well! :) So there was a really nice post on the Steam Deck subreddit asking how many people used Linux before the Steam Deck was announced and I posted my story there and I think it's really intruiging how people slowly transition to Linux out of the blue, because of random circumstances.
